One of the best steamed fish head ever!

16 Jun

Noticed the lack of updates recently. That’s because I have not eaten any nice food these few days. Now I’m so deprived of eating something good.

Today. Joo Hing restaurant at Joo Chiat. The famous steamed ‘song’ fish head. It’s heavenly!

Love the freshness of the fish head, love the bean paste, love the spring onions and love the oily but crispy and crunchy pork lard!!!

Ok, the picture says it all.

Also recommended: fried prawn rolls!!!

I will be back soon.

More than just a hotpot

12 Jun

Asians love to eat hotpot or steamboat. It symbolises ‘togetherness’ and we usually celebrate Chinese New Year by eating steamboat.

In recent years the culture of eating hotpot is trending here. There are just so many of them- mostly opened by mainland Chinese. But there’s one thing about them- the quality sucks.

There’s only ONE hotpot that I find is worth eating- JPot by the Jumbo Group. So expect fresh seafood and ingredients. Even though it’s a-la-carte and not buffet, you still can fill your stomachs with an average of $30 per pax. There are set menus for you to choose if you have no clue of what to order.

Individual hotpot- easier to cook/eat & more hygienic.

Their chilli and sauces buffet spread is awesome. My favourite is to mix garlic chilli sauce with a bit of sha char sauce then top with lots of fresh and fried garlic, spring onions and chinese parsley. Power max!

The seafood, meat and veggies are 99% fresh! This is what I’ll usually order: live prawns, fresh scallops, pork liver, marinated pork, jumbo pork ball, prawn balls, fried beancurd rolls, enoki mushrooms and veggies.

And everytime I come out of JPot, there’s only one word to describe- SHIOK!

Victor’s Dim Sum

12 Jun

Was in town and wanted something light before heading to JPot at 9.30pm for their late night dinner.

Decided to go to Victor’s Kitchen at Sunshine Plaza, Prinsep St. We have been eating their dim sum for more than 4 years already.

I think the quality of their dim sum is better than those in restaurants. Nice cosy eatery, but be prepared to queue and wait during peak hours.

My favorite dish: Scallop and Vegetable Dumpling.

T’s favorite Carrot Cake with XO sauce.

And delicious Siew Mai.

Portion is just right to fill our stomachs for 2 hours. Off to JPot in a while!

Heritage walkabout

10 Jun

Singapore Food Trail is located at the Singapore Flyer and started operations early this year. This is my 2nd time there. The 1st time was terrible- the place just opened, typical Singaporeans all flock there, crowded, hot, etc.

20110610-121243.jpg

I enjoyed my trip today even though I was there for work purpose. The crowd was just right and I had time to really look at the place and the decorations. Nicely done up.

20110610-122436.jpg

In general, I find the food there slightly above average and a bit overrated. Prices typically starts from $5 for a plate of noodles or rice.

Anyway I was deciding what to eat… Then I saw SATAY BEE HOON! Recalled that I just had it 2 days ago at chomp chomp but it was a disappointment. This time….

20110610-121926.jpg

FIRST CLASS! One of the better ones I’ve tasted. The peanut satay sauce is just right- not too thick and not too watery, and the taste is just awesome. But for this price and portion, I’ll rather go back to the one at Old Airport market (apparently related).

Also ordered fried oyster to share. Not too bad.

The presentation of the drinks and ice balls is something that I appreciate very much. So old skool. So nostalgic. Other than that, the bird’s nest drink is purely jelly that tasted plastic + syrup water.

20110610-122908.jpg

I don’t mind going back there again if I happen to be around the area or for some purpose, but I won’t travel there just to have a meal in view of the expensive parking rates and slightly above average food.

Oh I love Japanese food!

8 Jun

we were feeling sian, tired and restless tonight so we decided to indulge ourselves with Japanese food.

and the choice was clear- Sushi Tei at Big Splash, East Coast Parkway.
it’s our favorite and standard place for jap food coz the place is cosy and food there, imo, is better than their other outlets.

as usual, we ordered salmon ($8) and nama hotate ($10) sashimi. the sashimi so fresh, it slowly melted in the mouth together with the wasabi-soya sauce… then the aftertaste lingered… Woo..

20110608-093350.jpg

next, ebi tempura ($10). normal.

20110608-094040.jpg

lastly, our main courses. i had the phoenix roll ($15) and T had soft shell crab pasta ($14, seasonal). nice and yummy.

total damage was $66 after 10% member discount. satisfied. 

Where has all the satay bee hoon gone?

7 Jun

went to chomp chomp to have dinner with some colleagues after we ran off from some event .

as we were already quite full from the event’s buffet dinner, we only ordered fried oyster, Hokkien mee and satay bee hoon to share.

20110607-110224.jpg

maybe becoz we were already full, the food don’t taste as good, especially the satay bee hoon.

but the Hokkien mee is still as powerly good. fried oyster so-so only.

while eating the satay bee hoon, I was thinking: has the standard of this stall dropped? how come I don’t seem to be able to find a really good satay bee hoon?

well, since the choices are limited, I think I will still come back for the satay bee hoon if I have cravings for it.

otherwise, my first choice there will be the Hokkien mee- the one in green plates if you are wondering…
